Cannas have eyes that produce the sprouts where the flowers will come from. When inspecting a quality canna bulb, you should find 3-5 eyes for best results. HOW TO PLANT CANNA BULBS When you plant cannas, you want to make sure you first locate the eyes on the canna bulb (also referred to as a 'rhizome'). If you find all the eyes facing in the same general direction, plant it with the eyes facing upwards. If you cannot locate the eyes very easily, or they're shooting in all directions, then the next best thing to do is plant it flat, or sideways, and the eyes will find their way to the surface. When you're planting cannas, dig a hole three to four inches deep (approximately 2 inches below the soil line) and plant them ten to twelve inches apart so they have room to develop. WHERE TO PLANT CANNA BULBS Canna work wonderfully as anchors to the back of your flower bed, grouped together for a showy splash of color, or along walkways. Dwarf cannas work well in containers and their exotic-looking flowers are magnets for hummingbirds. Even though cannas will grow in partial shade, they're sun lovers at heart and will perform best in full sun. WHEN TO PLANT CANNA BULBS It is best to wait until the frost in Spring is gone, and plant a week or so after. Canna are tropical plants that love warm soil and the hot sun, but be careful, they also love water so be sure keep them hydrated for color from late summer through the first frost.
