Raga Tilak Kamod is a popular raga with all seven whole notes of the major scale. Yet, its peculiar movements gives it a distinct colour. After a brief exposition of the raga, Soumik presents a composition by his late Guru, Padmabhushan Buddhadev Das Gupta. What makes it unique is the off beat pick-up to the composition allowing the player to meander through the raga and return not just to the primary beat (or sum) but also to the displaced and quirky pick-up position. Soumik Datta is a British Indian musician and composer, specializing on the 19 stringed fretless instrument, Sarod. Brought up in London, Soumik was trained by the late Padmabhushan Pandit Buddhadev Das Gupta in the Senia Shahjahanpur style of Sarod playing. He also holds a Masters in western music composition from Trinity College of Music, London. Dubbed 'British Sarod Maestro' (Time Out), Soumik has composed and released seven albums. He first made his mark with Fretless which showcased him as 'a magnificent Indian classical Sarod player with a rare melodic awareness’ (Times of India). While Soumik continued to present traditional Hindustani classical concerts, he began to explore ways of bridging Indian music with global music forms.
