(24 Dec 1976) RR7651A JAMAICAN ELECTIONS Jamaica's 1976 general elections resulted in a landslide victory for premier Michael Manley's People's National Party over the opposition Jamaican Labour Party. Many saw it as the victory of socialism over conservatism, but the opposition claimed Manley was a Communist and attacked him bitterly over his increasingly friendly relations with Cuba. This report examines the issues, including the economic back ground and the violence which raged in the island all year.
